How I’m trained to teach
I trained as a teacher with the late Dr Don Weed who founded the Interactive Teaching Method approach. I learned this approach during my training with him to become an Alexander Technique teacher. I know, some of you are thinking ‘what’s that?’ and that’s a question for another time.
What I’d like to talk about here is the ethos and the principles of how I’m trained to teach.
My trainer, Don, devised a method of teaching and training that is based on principles of how people learn and underlying ideas about people’s capabilities.
It is grounded in the idea that people are capable of learning, that we are meaning-makers. That the absence of knowledge doesn’t equal the absence of ability.
That effective teaching isn’t filling a person’s head with information and expecting them to reproduce it verbatim.
It allows for and makes constructive use of the ‘latent powers of originality’ of the student.
And it’s actually enjoyable!
